Ultrasound is a painless imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of your body. Our Hudson and Trinity offices offer in office ultrasound for adult patients, which means many imaging needs can be handled without a separate imaging center appointment. The test uses no radiation and no needles, and the findings are coordinated directly with your care plan.

What ultrasound imaging includes

During an ultrasound, a small handheld device called a transducer sends sound waves into the body. The waves bounce back and create live images on a screen. These images help your provider look at organs, blood vessels, and soft tissue.

In our office, ultrasound is used for:

• Abdominal evaluation, looking at organs in the belly area
• Vascular evaluation, looking at blood vessels and blood flow
• Soft tissue evaluation, looking at lumps, swelling, or other areas of concern

In general medicine, ultrasound can help explain symptoms such as abdominal discomfort or swelling, check blood flow, and follow changes over time. Your provider decides whether ultrasound is the right test for your situation and explains what it may show.

Ultrasound often works alongside other in office testing. Your provider may also order lab work or an EKG to build a complete picture. Findings are reviewed with you and added to your chart, which is shared across both offices.

What to expect at your visit

Before the test: Preparation depends on the area being examined. Some abdominal ultrasounds work best on an empty stomach, so you may be asked not to eat for several hours beforehand. The team will tell you exactly how to prepare when your test is scheduled. Wear comfortable clothing that makes the area easy to reach, and bring a list of your medications.

During the test: You lie on the exam table while a clear gel is applied to your skin. The gel helps the sound waves travel. The transducer is moved gently over the area, and you may be asked to change position or hold your breath briefly. Most people feel only light pressure. The gel may feel cool.

After the test: The gel is wiped off, and you can return to normal activities right away. Your provider reviews the findings and explains what they mean for your care, including any next steps such as follow up imaging, more testing, or a referral. Results are available in the patient portal.

Insurance and coverage

Ultrasound is commonly covered by Medicare and many commercial plans when it is medically needed. Coverage depends on your plan and the reason for the test. Please call the office to verify your coverage before your visit.

Seek urgent care or call 911 for sudden, severe abdominal pain, sudden swelling and pain in one leg, or trouble breathing. These symptoms need prompt evaluation and should not wait for a scheduled test.
