Before you book with a new primary care doctor on Medicare, confirm which type of Medicare you have, then check that the office participates with your exact plan. Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage work differently, so a quick call to the office and your plan can save time and surprises.
Choosing a primary care doctor is one of the most useful decisions you can make on Medicare, because that doctor helps you plan screenings, manage ongoing conditions, and coordinate specialists. Before you book in Trinity or anywhere else, it helps to know exactly what kind of Medicare coverage you have and how to confirm that an office works with it. This guide walks through each step in plain language.
What should I check before booking?
Start with two questions: which type of Medicare do you have, and does the office participate with your exact plan? Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicare Supplement coverage each work differently, so the answer to the first question shapes the second. Have your cards in hand, then confirm with both the office and your plan before your first visit.
A quick checklist:
- Know your coverage type. Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, or Original Medicare with a supplement.
- Find your exact plan name. Medicare Advantage plan names and plan numbers are printed on your plan card.
- Check the office's insurance list. Our insurance page lists the Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicare Supplement plans on file for each office.
- Call the office and your plan to confirm participation for the specific office you want to visit.
What should I know about Original Medicare?
Original Medicare is the federal program that includes Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). Primary care office visits are generally covered under Part B.
Medicare.gov explains that with Original Medicare, you can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S., and in most cases you do not need a referral to see a specialist. That flexibility makes the first check simple: ask whether the office accepts Original Medicare.
At Internal Medicine MD, our insurance page confirms that Original Medicare is accepted at both the Hudson office and the Trinity office. Railroad Medicare is accepted at the Hudson office only.
How is Medicare Advantage different?
Medicare Advantage plans, sometimes called Part C, are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They provide your Part A and Part B coverage through the plan, and many include extra benefits.
The biggest difference for choosing a doctor is the network. Medicare.gov notes that with a Medicare Advantage plan, you may need to use doctors who are in the plan's network and service area for non emergency care, and you may need a referral to see a specialist. Some plans also ask you to choose a primary care provider within the plan.
That is why participation depends on your specific plan, not just the insurance company's name. One company may offer many Medicare Advantage plans with different networks. Our insurance page lists the specific Medicare Advantage plans on file, and not every plan from each listed carrier is accepted. Please verify your exact plan before your visit.
Medicare's Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. If you are thinking about changing plans for the coming year, it is worth confirming that the doctors you want to see are in the new plan's network before you enroll.
What should I know about Medicare Supplement coverage?
Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, is extra coverage sold by private insurance companies. Medicare.gov explains that it helps pay some costs that Original Medicare does not, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles, and that you must have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) to buy a policy.
Medigap works alongside Original Medicare. It is not used with Medicare Advantage, and Medicare.gov notes that you cannot buy a Medigap policy to cover out of pocket costs in a Medicare Advantage plan.
If you have a supplement, bring that card along with your Medicare card. Our insurance page also lists the Medicare Supplement and secondary options on file for the practice, so you can check your plan before your visit.
How do I verify my exact plan before the visit?
A few minutes on the phone can confirm everything. Here is a simple order that works well:
- Gather your cards. Your red, white, and blue Medicare card, any Medicare Advantage plan card, and any supplement or secondary card.
- Write down your plan details. Note the full plan name and any plan number shown on the card.
- Compare with the office's list. Look for your exact plan on the insurance page, including which office it applies to.
- Call the office. The Trinity office can be reached at (727) 997-1635. Have your cards ready so the team can review your information.
- Call your plan. Use the number on your plan card to confirm the office is in network and to ask whether you need to name a primary care provider or get referrals.
If your coverage changes during the year, let the office know before your next appointment so your information can be checked again.
What preventive visits does Medicare cover?
Medicare Part B covers two prevention planning visits that many people use to get started with a primary care office:
- The Welcome to Medicare preventive visit. Medicare.gov says this visit is covered once within the first 12 months you have Part B. It is not a comprehensive physical exam.
- The yearly Wellness visit. Your first one can take place after you have had Part B for more than 12 months and at least 12 months after a Welcome to Medicare visit. After that, it is covered once every 12 months. It is a planning visit, not a routine physical exam.
For both visits, Medicare.gov explains that you pay nothing for the visit itself if your provider accepts assignment. If other tests or services are done during the same visit, coinsurance may apply and the Part B deductible may apply. Medicare Advantage plans cover these preventive visits too, and plan rules and networks still apply.
